Golden Globes 2014 Predictions

Well, here we are! Movie award season begins now, with the 71st Annual Golden Globes airing tonight! They may not be the most prestigious of the award ceremonies, but they are our first insight as to what could sweep the larger ceremonies. Will Gravity topple 12 Years A Slave? Will American Hustle fall under The Wolf of Wall Street? Will Jennifer Lawrence win another award? Here's what I think!

Best Picture- Drama

12 Years A Slave
Gravity
Philomena
Captain Phillips
Rush

What Will Win- Most likely, 12 Years A Slave. A political film about American history and slavery is pretty much a shoe-in, and with all the Oscar hype for it it's heading the right way. But I wouldn't put it down as a lock, as there is one other film that could stand in it's way..

What Should Win- Gravity. I'm yet to actually see 12 Years A Slave (because it hasn't been released here yet), but Gravity was the film of 2013 and I'm highly doubtful that will change. It's a two horse race, here.

Best Picture- Musical or Comedy

American Hustle
The Wolf of Wall Street
Inside Llewyn Davis
Her
Nebraska

What Will Win- American Hustle seems to have this in the bag. It's funny, it's brilliantly acted, and it's great to look at. It's just so likeable.

What Should Win- This is one I can't really answer, as American Hustle is currently the only film out of the bunch that's been released over here. But, for what it's worth, American Hustle has my vote.

Best Actor- Drama

Chiwetel Ejiofor - 12 Years A Slave
Idres Elba - Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips
Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club
Robert Redford - All Is Lost

Who Will Win- Ejiofor seems to have this locked down, from what I hear his turn as newly turned slave is something truly incredible and can't really be stopped.

Who Should Win- Again, I've only had the opportunity to see Captain Phillips and my mind may change when I've seen some of the other nominees, but Tom Hanks was truly exceptional in that film, so I back him.

Best Actress- Drama

Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine
Sandra Bullock - Gravity
Judi Dench - Philomena
Emma Thompson - Saving Mr Banks
Kate Winslet - Labor Day

Who Will Win- This is quite a face off between Bullock and Blanchett, but Blanchett seems to have the upper hand here based off previous awards.

Who Should Win- Bullock. She was incredible in Gravity, and I would happily have her take this home.

Best Actor- Musical or Comedy

Christain Bale - American Hustle
Bruce Dern - Nebraska
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Wolf of Wall Street
Oscar Isaac - Insie Llewyn Davis
Joaquin Pheonix - Her

Who Will Win- Bale seems to be the frontrunner here and his turn as Irving Rosenfield was something to astound.

Who Should Win- Living in the UK is something of a curse right about now, so many of these films haven't been released her yet. I support Christian Bale.

Best Actress- Musical or Comedy

Amy Adams - American Hustle
Julie Delpy - Before Midnight
Greta Gerwig - Frances Ha
Julie Louise-Drewfus - Enough Said
Meryl Streep - August: Osage County

Who Will Win- Amy Adams seems to be locked down here.

Who Should Win- Again, Amy Adams.

Best Supporting Actor

Barkhad Abdi - Captain Phillips
Daniel Bruhl - Rush
Bradley Cooper - American Hustle
Michael Fassbender - 12 Years A Slave
Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club

Who Will Win- Jared Leto is largely tipped for the success here.

Who Should Win- Out of the three I've been able to see so far, I have to support Bruhl. He stood out by a milestone in Rush, and it would be great to see it claim an award, as it was a truly outstanding film.

Best Supporting Actress

Sally Hawkins - Blue Jasmine
Jennifer Lawrence - American Hustle
Lupita Nyong'o - 12 Years A Slave
Julia Roberts - August: Osage County
June Squibb - Nebraska

Who Will Win- Again, a two horse race. Nyong'o is largely the favourite, but Lawrence is such a favourite with award shows. It could go either way, but I think they will lean towards Lawrence.

Who Should Win- Jennifer Lawrence, hopefully.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuarón - Gravity
Paul Greengrass - Captain Phillips
Steve McQueen - 12 Years A Slave
Alexander Payne - Nebraska
David O. Russell - American Hustle

Who Will Win - As consolation for not taking Best Picture, Cuarón will get this for his sublime work on Gravity.

Who Should Win- Cuarón. Without doubt.

Best Screenplay

Philomena
Her
Nebraska
12 Years A Slave
American Hustle

What Will Win- Her, Philomena and Nebraska are all set to go unrewarded this time, as this seems to be a showdown between American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave. American Hustle seems the favourite.

What Should Win- American Hustle. It was packed with humour and so well written.

Best Original Score

Gravity
All Is Lost
12 Years A Slave
The Book Thief
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

What Will Win- Gravity

What Should Win- Gravity

Best Animated Feature

Frozen
Despicable Me 2
The Croods

What Will Win- Frozen, definitely.

What Should Win- The annoyingly un-nominated Monsters University. Seriously, what happened there?

Well, there you go! That's what I think is going to be the outcome of tonight, with American Hustle far the frontrunner with a possible five awards! Gravity and 12 Years A Slave look set to take two each, with Frozen, Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Jasmine maybe taking one each too.
